Elm bark – supports digestion and protects the gastrointestinal tract

Elm bark has become a passion project of ours and that is mainly because the search for the perfect elm bark turned out to be much more difficult than expected.
Elm bark – also known as slippery elm bark – is made from the bark of the American red elm tree and lives up to its English name.

The bark of the elm tree consists of sugar molecules called polysaccharides (also known from Moro’s carrot soup). In order to actually use elm bark, you mix the powder with water and a kind of slime is formed. The slimier the better. Which is exactly what we have been looking for for a long time. Since then, we have found the perfect elm bark and are more than happy with the consistency.

Anyway, let’s get down to the hard facts 🙂
Slippery elm bark is known to support digestion and the gastrointestinal tract, especially if a dog is experiencing problems such as diarrhoea or vomiting. The mixed mucus or polysaccharides coat the mucous membranes of the stomach and protect them from irritation and inflammation.

Slippery elm bark is not only useful for gastrointestinal complaints, it can also be used to relieve toothaches and sore throats or respiratory complaints and inflammations due to the syrup’s slimy consistency.
